The World Bank aims to reduce gender disparities and inequalities by enhancing women’s participation in economic development. It assists member countries in formulating and implementing their gender and development goals (Operational Policy [OP] 4.20). The World Development Report 2012: Gender Equality and Development (World Bank, 2012c) argues that greater gender equality is not just the right thing to do but also smart economics. It also highlights the need to improve the availability of quality gender-disaggregated data and supports more experimentation and systematic evaluation.
