The livestock sector is a main contributor to Somali livelihoods, engaging an estimated 65% of the population. Unlike many pastoral systems, the Somali system has a heavy domestic trade and export orientation. Somalia exports millions of animals annually to the Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, and animals are also marketed in neighbouring African countries.
