Abstract:

About 65% of the population in Somalia depend entirely on the livestock sector as the main source of livelihood. This paper seeks to find out the criteria used to select male breeding animals and the criteria used to cull female breeding animals as well as traditional livestock breeding practices of Somali pastoralists for camels, cattle, sheep and goats.
