Abstract:
The practice of using Girgir water spreading dyke provides protection from flash floods, control, manage and conserve the flood water to contribute to sustainable crop production, and therefore contribute to food security, rehabilitation of the natural resources and poverty alleviation. The water held at the dam has enabled households to cultivate 2,000 acres, with each household getting 2 acres. The management of flood water has helped to increase annual grain harvest per household from 6-8 sacks to 16-24 sacks of 90 kg of grain (mainly sorghum).
